This course worth 8 MEAC ACCREDITED CEU HOURS  will discuss treatment of conditions requiring drug therapy in midwifery care, and how to assist with pharmacology decision-making during pregnancy and lactation. Every midwife should regularly refresh knowledge of a select formulary of drugs used in midwifery care, and practice the skills needed to safely use these drugs to protect the health and safety of mothers and babies in out-of-hospital settings. Midwives should also be aware of the issues regarding drug use by their clients, and updated best practice for determining risks in pregnancy and lactation.

I. Overview of drug use during pregnancy and updated best practice for the midwife

II. Obtaining, storing, cold chain and disposal of drugs for midwifery use  

III. Practice in proper use of each drug, including practice injections 

VI. Indications, Contra-indications, Dosage, Side effects, Duration of Treatment, Route of Administration, Action time or half life, and Proper Storage of each of the following drugs used by midwives: 

  1. Oxygen

  2. Oxytocin (Pitocin)

  3. Lidocaine HCl 2%

  4. Misoprostil

  5. RHo(D) Immune Globulin

  6. Vitamin K1

  7. Erythromycin Ophthalmic

  8. Ointment Penicillin G

  9. Ampicillin
